US President, Donald Trump has sent a special envoy to represent him at the swearing-in of President Museveni at Kololo.
President Museveni on Monday afternoon confirmed that Trump had sent Nick Checker, the Senior Bureau Official in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs to represent him at the ceremony.
He said the two had met at State House in Entebbe.
“I emphasized the need for value addition and industrialisation across Africa. We cannot continue exporting raw materials such as coffee, oil and minerals without processing them. Value addition is crucial for expanding Africa’s GDP, creating jobs and increasing the purchasing power of our people,” Museveni said in a post on X.
Sending an envoy to represent him at the swearing-in ceremony further reafirms the US' close ties with Uganda.
Biography
Previously, Nick Checker was the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Southern Africa and Foreign Assistance.
Prior to joining State, he served as Deputy Executive Secretary for the National Security Council under President Trump.
From 2014-2025, he worked for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) covering conflicts in the greater Middle East and Horn of Africa as well as in the Office of Congressional Affairs. For his work on Afghanistan, he was awarded the Intelligence Commendation Medal in 2021 and the Director’s Award for Analysis in 2022. In 2023, he was a national security fellow in the office of Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN).
He holds a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from the University of Wisconsin and a master’s degree in Security Studies from Georgetown University.
